A very brief history of the Littlehampton Town Show

1990

The Town Show came about as a result of a letter back in 1990 to Town Council enquiring what had happened to the Flower Show they remembered from the 1950s.  Town Council approached the Allotment Association which was unable to organise such an event due to financial restraints.

1991

It was decided to hold an exhibition to gauge interest, and this took place in the Council Chambers in the summer of 1991.  Due to the large amount of interest and success of this event, a Committee was formed involving several voluntary groups from around the Town.

1992

The first Town Show took place on Saturday 5th September 1992 at St. Catherine’s Parish Centre, Beach Road, with approximately 400 exhibits.

1993 –  2002

The second Town Show was held at the Flintstone Centre in East Street on Saturday 11th September the date being altered to avoid the Arundel Festivities and other local events. The Show continued at the Flintstone Centre until 2002.

2003

In 2003 the Town Show combined with Town Council’s Family Fun Day and moved to a marquee at Rosemead, where it has continued to this present day.  The date has always remained the second Saturday in September.  The past few years have seen entries increase significantly from the early days of 400 exhibits to 2013 when we had a record 758 exhibits staged, and each year since has seen an average of 650 plus. Even the inclement weather of 2011 did not deter the visitors who stood in the rain and enjoyed the entertainment, this shows how much people look forward to and enjoy this event.

The combined Town Show and Family Fun Day has embraced the whole local Community with all the Voluntary Groups in the Community Marquee, and Exhibitors in the Horticultural Marquee joining together on this special day, to make this a very enjoyable event for the whole Town to take part in and be proud of.  As with all events of this type it also has the benefit of attracting visitors from a wider area from Portsmouth to Brighton, Petersfield to Haywards Heath and even further afield.  The Town Show and Family Fun Day are now a major event in the Town’s calendar, and people do not need to remember the date just the second Saturday in September.

The joint event was seen as a way for Town Council to help all local Organisations gain members, raise funds and awareness of their particular group while at the same time raising awareness of Littlehampton and what the Town has to offer.

We have several exhibitors who first entered in the 7 and under age group at some of the early shows which means a whole generation of Littlehampton residents have grown with the show.

2020

This would have been the 29th Town Show but was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

2022

Following the sad death of HRH Queen Elizabeth, The Littlehampton Town Council cancelled the Family Fun Day and the Town Show did not take place.
