Tips for exhibiting at shows

General Advice

In the first instance please refer to the rules which are printed in the back pf the schedule.

Please ensure that when exhibiting you make sure the correct quantity is placed on the show bench, and any size limitations are adhered to.

Section 1 Chrysanthemums

There are various classifications but the Town Show only asks for Incurved, Reflex, Intermediate and Spray.

Blooms must be fresh and conform to the category entered make sure you stage the correct number of blooms asked for. Vases are provided for these classes.

Section 2 Dahlias

There are many classifications of dahlia but the Town Show concentrates on only 6 of these.

Section 3 Flowers

As with Chrysanthemums and Dahlias items need to fresh. With pot plants if the schedule calls for 8” max pot that is the inside diameter at the top of the pot.  The rose button hole can only be supported with rose foliage and not any added items e.g. ferns. 

Section 4 Vegetables

Runner beans must have a short section of stalk still attached.  Beetroot, carrots and parsnips should have their tops trimmed to approximately 3 inches and tied with raffia or soft twine.  Onions should also have their tops trimmed and tied again using raffia or soft twine. All root vegetables should be free of soil but do not rub hard so as to remove any skin.   Cabbages, cauliflowers, lettuces etc, should be displayed with at least 3 inches of stem.  Tomatoes should have the calyx still attached.

Section 5 Fruit

All fruit with the exception of peaches, nectarines and apricots should be displayed with stalks and calyx intact.

Section 7 Domestic

Preserves.  All Sweet Preserves (with the exception of Lemon Curd) must be covered with a new twist top only OR waxed disc and cellophane.

Lemon Curd must only be covered using a waxed disc and cellophane.

Vinegar Preserves (with the exception of Relishes) must only be covered with a solid vinegar proof top.

All labels to include the main fruit used and full date, i.e. day/month/year.

No commercial jars or lids i.e. named brands, will be acceptable. Twist tops are available from most good hardware stores. If in difficulty contact a Member of the Committee.

All exhibits with the exception of preserves must be covered with cling film. Where the schedule gives an open choice to the exhibitor do not use fish or cream in the exhibit as the temperature in the marquee may not be ideal for such items to stay fresh. (we do not want to poison the judge).

Victoria Sandwich must have a flat top without air bubbles and no cooling rack marks. It must have raspberry jam filling and the top must have a light sprinkling of caster sugar.

Cakes in general should be well risen and evenly baked, any fruit should be evenly distributed. No cooling rack marks.

Pastry such as quiche and apple pie should be cooked in a metal dish/plate and placed on a heated baking tray in the oven to ensure the base cooks thoroughly and is not soggy.

Section 8 Floral Art

Section 10 Photography

All photographs to be presented in a picture mount.
No frames.
Min size A6 (10x14cm), Max size A4 including mount.
Photos to be taken in the last 12 months.
Photographs must not have been exhibited at this Show before.
Please obtain permission from parent/guardian to include photographs of children under 18yrs.
